Submitting Lab Calculations
Students can enter a calculated answers as either:
- Single values, graded individually
- Calculation groups, graded together (ideal for repetitive tasks such as titration trials, converting temperature to 1/T values, or time conversions)
Custom lab webpages - built by Chem21Labs Content Specialists - act as your Virtual TA, guiding students step-by-step. The system opens the next problem, grades submissions (full or partial credit), and provides immediate feedback.
Key features:
- Guided workflow: Students progress step-by-step; they cannot skip ahead.
- Navigation controls: Side panel enables answer submission, progression, and display of tries, points, and tolerances (can be hidden on mobile).
- Custom settings: Instructors set tries (typically 3), point values, and grading tolerances.
- Flexible tolerances: Options include absolute (e.g. ±0.1), percent (e.g. ±1%), significant figures (e.g. ±2 in 3rd SF), or decimal place (e.g. ±0 in 2nd DP). The SF and DP tolerances can be specified with Excel or chemical rounding.
- Scientific notation: Answers can be required in scientific notation.
- Immediate feedback: Responses are graded instantly with optional hints; after three incorrect attempts, the correct answer and formula (using the student's data) are shown.
